Plymouth Secondary Intervention and Reintegration

Bretonside is the main secondary teaching base for pupils aged 11 to 16 who have been excluded from school or who are at risk of exclusion. Some pupils are placed with us via the Local Authority and others by referral from their main school. By the end of May each year over 130 pupils will be attached to Bretonside base.

Pupils follow a secondary style curriculum of separate lessons, with a strong emphasis on English and Maths. All pupils have opportunities to be involved in alternative curriculum activities, ranging from all day Learning Outside the Classroom to vocational work based training.

Every pupil has a place in a mixed age tutor group led by their personal tutor as well as mentor support for their age and stage related learning and pastoral needs.

Pupils have a rich diet of learning based on the skills needed to succeed in the next steps of their life either on return to mainstream school or post 16 destinations and the world of work.

We offer qualifications in English, Maths, Science, IT, Technology, PE, PSHE, Humanities, Citizenship and Art. Many pupils also use other providers to take part in wider learning including Vocational subjects, Art, Design and Media and work based learning such as Construction Skills and Land Based Studies.

There are three year 11 classes, three year 10 classes and four combined Key Stage 3 classes.

Dan Clift

Lead Teacher

I grew up in Cornwall and always wanted to be involved in sport. I was lucky to have PE teachers that fostered this throughout my school life.

I left school after A- levels and completed an undergraduate degree in Leeds, reading PE and Sport & Exercise Science. The year after I graduated from Marjons in Plymouth with a PGCE in Physical Education.

From this I took a break to pursue sport and was enrolled in a rowing programme which led me to represent my country across Europe and in the Commonwealth rowing Championships, where I won Gold. Injury led me back to teaching, where I was Head of PE in a school in Dubai for two years.

I returned to Plymouth and worked in a secondary school as a middle leader for several years before taking up the new challenge of working for ACE.

Sam Morahan

Lead Teacher

I grew up in Plymouth and since leaving secondary school, my aspiration has been to work with pupils in our local community and provide them with the best education that I can. I graduated with a first-class honours in BA (hons) Coach & Physical Education from the University of St Mark and John.

Following this in 2013/2014, I completed a PGCE in Secondary Physical Education which included enhancement in SEND. During this time, I was placed as a trainee teacher at ACE Schools. Following my placement and the completion of teacher training, I was employed by ACE as a teacher of PE and PSHE and shortly after starting, acquired middle leadership responsibility.

During my time at ACE I have completed a Master’s in Education and more recently, I have completed a Doctorate in Education (EdD) at Plymouth University specialising in assessment. I am currently a Lead Teacher at Bretonside.

Outside of school, I enjoy sports such as football and triathlons alongside going to the gym. I have recently completed 2 Ironman triathlons and aspire to do more!
