# Maths

## Curriculum Intent

Our aim is for all our students to acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.  In order to do this they must be able to:

• Rapidly and accurately recall and apply facts and concepts

• Develop a growing confidence to reason mathematically

• Develop the ability to apply maths to solve problems and to test hypotheses

All our staff are committed to raising the standards of numeracy of all our pupils, developing their ability to use numeracy skills effectively in all areas of the curriculum and the skills necessary to cope confidently with the demands of further education, employment and adult life.

Maths is a fundamental part of everyday life, and has been developed over centuries.  It supports other curriculum subjects, and teaches necessary skills for adulthood.

#### Key Stage 3 students will learn:

Autumn: Patterns and sequences, place value and calculations, properties of shapes and fractions.
Spring: Statistical methods, probability, expressions and formulae, and measures.
Summer: Handling data, ratio and proportion, percentages and equations.

#### Key Stage 4 students will learn:

Autumn:
Year 10: Integers; decimals; algebra; tables, charts and graphs
Year 11: Ratio and proportion; Pythagoras; trigonometry; probability

Spring:

• Year 10: Fractions, decimals and percentages; equations; sequences
• Year 11: Plans and elevations; construction; loci; quadratic equations and circle theorems

Summer:

• Year 10: Shapes and angles; statistics; area and volume; real life graphs and transformations
• Year 11: Indices; standard form; vectors; simultaneous equations
• Year 10/11: Additional topics for higher course: surds; further graphs and functions; co-ordinate geometry; accuracy and bounds; direct and inverse proportion; cubic graphs; exponential graphs and geometric proof

All of our Year 11 students are entered for Edexcel Entry Level Numeracy and most are entered for Edexcel Linear two-tier GCSE
