The UK's first festival of immersive tech for social and environmental change.

We're thrilled to announce our new festival, eXtRaordinary. Taking place from the 9th - 11th May at the Market Hall in Plymouth, a cutting-edge immersive tech centre.

On Thursday 9th May, we'll be connecting with local schools to inspire careers in the immersive sector, shining a light on innovative projects, and demystifying jobs in tech.
On Friday 10th May, we're focusing on connecting individuals in the immersive tech industry. We have a fantastic selection of exhibitors showcasing their work in the main hall and a series of exciting talks and panels that will be announced soon...
Finally, on Saturday 11th May, we're opening up the Market Hall for the public to get immersed.

Tesco

Tesco have recently announced the launch of their new Stronger Starts Retail Apprenticeship programme, as part of their commitment to help young people achieve a stronger start in life.

Stronger Starts is one of the few apprenticeship programmes that doesn’t require any qualifications or experience as entry requirements.

After completing the programme, apprentices gain a Level 2 National Standard in Retail, which is the equivalent of 5 GCSE passes.

The programme opens for applications on 24th June 2024.

Join one of the live webinars with the Early Careers team from Tesco to learn more about their Stronger Starts Retail Apprenticeship programme, opening for applications in June 2024.

You can join on 14th May at either 4pm-5pm or 6pm-7pm - please join the session time which is most suitable for you. If you are not able to make either of these times, please still register so you can receive the recording.

Young Chef Team Challenge

City College Plymouth

Get ready for an exhilarating culinary showdown at the Young Chef Team Challenge! A chance for aspiring young chefs eager to showcase their talent and creativity in the kitchen, we’re calling on local school teams, made up of three culinary wizards, to join us in a dynamic battle of taste, presentation, and teamwork.

Participants will have the exciting challenge of rolling up their sleeves, donning their chef whites, and bringing their A-game as they prepare, cook, and serve a spectacular three-course meal, all within a two-hour timeframe. The victorious team will not only earn the coveted title of Young Chef Team Champions with a Masterchef-style apron to match, but will also secure a complimentary spot in our prestigious Junior Chef Academy, an opportunity of a lifetime to further refine their skills and passion for the culinary arts. In-Person Work Experience - Tops Day Nurseries

FACE-2-FACE work experience with Tops Day Nurseries – July 1st-5th

An opportunity of a 5-day face-to-face work experience placement, available at Tops Day Nurseries. There is an opening for 3 students at each of their 31 nurseries across the Southwest. Each student will need an enhanced DBS costing £38 – if you require any support with this, please let us know and we will do our best to help.

If this is of interest, please register onto the Speakers for Schools’ portal to complete the application. This will be a popular placement and places are expected to go quickly, therefore please note that the current application deadline for 24th May could close earlier.

Virtual Insight into University course - For Years 11 & 12

We are delighted to let you know that we are now accepting applications for our extremely popular Virtual Insight into University course. 

This course is a comprehensive virtual experience allowing students to explore STEM studies at university and the career opportunities that these subjects can lead to.  It will also give students access to information on student life, STEM projects and activities set by leading UK universities and global STEM companies, first year undergraduate lectures, live interactive sessions with academics, admissions tutors, employers and current students. 

The course will run during the period 1st July – 23rd August 2024 and can be completed flexibility to fit around other commitments.  On completion of the course which involves 30hrs of study, students will receive a Silver Industrial Cadets Award.

There is a fee of £95 to access this course but we do have bursaries available for eligible students eg. Those who are in receipt of Free School Meals, Pupil Premium etc.

If you are interested in tinkering with motors, cars and bikes, come and have a go at checking essential fluid levels and see how diagnostic equipment communicates with the vehicle, and take part in our wheel change challenge!

Could you be the next Bill Gates? Are you curious about the world of computers and technology? Then look no further! Receive hands-on experience in coding, problem-solving, and digital creativity and learn from our experienced lecturers. It’s your chance to dip your toes into the exciting world of computing and discover the endless possibilities it offers.

  • Engineering, Fabrication & Welding

Are you a budding engineer trying to decide what route to take? If you enjoy working with your hands and fancy giving our state-of-the-art machinery and tools a go, join us for our engineering, fabrication and welding taster session.

  • Live Events

Go behind the scenes and experience how the technical wizards work their magic in our fully-equipped drama and dance studios. In this taster session, you will learn all about lighting, sound, health and safety, and general event management from the professionals.

Whether you’re aspiring to be a film director, graphic designer, podcaster, or photographer, our media taster has it all! Participate in practical workshops and get to grips with everything from video production to design and unleash your creativity.

  • Construction Trades – Bricklaying, Painting & Decorating, Plastering & Wood Trades

Dive into brick and woodwork, perfect for those who love outdoor problem- solving, with hands-on tasks like building brick pyramids and crafting wood joints. Explore your creative side in plastering, and painting and decorating, mastering the art with practical experience in a simulated work environment.

  • Dance

This session provides comprehensive training with experienced lecturers. You’ll have the opportunity to explore various dance styles and techniques, enhancing your versatility as a dancer.

  • Games Development

If you are curious about the world of gaming, this is the session for you! Using the latest games development tools, you will spend most of the session immersed in the world of games development. The session will help you experience two of the most important aspects of building a computer game.

  • Health & Childhood Education

Did you know there are over 144 different jobs in the care sector? This taster will offer you the opportunity to find out about the various topics you could study, take part in interactive workshops exploring activities for children and their learning styles, and hear from course lecturers and industry professionals about how to take your first steps towards a career in the caring professions.

  • Hospitality & Catering

Are you a young aspiring chef or hospitality enthusiast looking to kickstart your culinary journey? Within this workshop, you’ll learn from experienced lecturers who have real-world expertise in the hospitality and catering field and gain hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art kitchen facility.

  • Performing Arts

This session is led by experienced lecturers who are passionate about the performing arts and can help you develop your talents and skills. You’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in various aspects of performance, from acting on stage to vocal training. Our workshop is a blank canvas waiting for your imagination to run wild! Explore your artistic side and try every medium from drawing to printing. Put paintbrush to paper with our art taster. Explore drawing, textiles, sculpture, and much more.

A must for any fans of BBC One’s The Apprentice, you’ll hear from course lecturers and industry professionals while working together in teams to design and market your own company, building up to a final group pitch.

  • Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy

Want to know the secrets behind gorgeous nails, flawless make-up and glamorous hair styling? Get the inside scoop in our hair and beauty taster session. After taking part in two workshops during the day, there will also be the opportunity to showcase your skills.

  • Marine Engineering (Boat Building)

Do you see yourself becoming a builder with a difference? Our marine engineering and boatbuilding taster session will provide you with an insight into a career building boats rather than building houses! Whether your ambitions lie in building ships or outfitting the latest super yachts, our industry experts will take you through the basics during this hands-on session.

  • Music

If you love music then this taster session is for you! Working in groups, you will create your own live music piece that you will perform in the afternoon. You will also learn more about the different opportunities available in the music business, and hear from lecturers about their experiences in the industry – from their education and training to playing live and much more.

  • Public Services

Are you someone who can make a difference and display skills recognised by employers across the world?! Why not come and sample a day in the life of a public services student? Experience various events including interactive crime scenes, military style fitness and looking at the UK government to understand how and why decisions are made. Working in the public sector has hugely rewarding opportunities – are you ready to be the change?

  • Sport

Sport brings in £39 billion pounds to the UK each year! Are you ready to be part of it? Come along to our taster session and experience fitness testing in our elite laboratory, try your hand at recovery sports massage and understand exactly how and why our bodies are designed the way they are. Hear from our experienced industry lecturers and see how the sports career of your dreams is not a million miles away!
