Fit and Fed

Plymouth City Council has received funding from the Department for Education to coordinate a city-wide holiday activity and food programme during the 2024 Easter, summer and Christmas holidays to primarily support families with children who receive benefit related free school meals.

Virtual Insight into University course - For Years 11 & 12

We are delighted to let you know that we are now accepting applications for our extremely popular Virtual Insight into University course. 

This course is a comprehensive virtual experience allowing students to explore STEM studies at university and the career opportunities that these subjects can lead to.  It will also give students access to information on student life, STEM projects and activities set by leading UK universities and global STEM companies, first year undergraduate lectures, live interactive sessions with academics, admissions tutors, employers and current students. 

The course will run during the period 1st July – 23rd August 2024 and can be completed flexibility to fit around other commitments.  On completion of the course which involves 30hrs of study, students will receive a Silver Industrial Cadets Award.

There is a fee of £95 to access this course but we do have bursaries available for eligible students eg. Those who are in receipt of Free School Meals, Pupil Premium etc.

The BIG Splash

We are excited to be hosting the two-day Big Splash STEAM event on Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 July 2024 at Tinside Lido on Plymouth Hoe and would love your young people to join us!

We are inviting anyone aged 16 to 19-year-olds (and those up to the age of 24 with SEND) to come along to one of our afternoon sessions (1pm-2.30pm) to explore the exciting world of the blue and green economy.

Why come along: 

  • to experience hands-on STEAM activities designed to stimulate interest and understanding.
  • to see exciting pool demonstrations showcasing real-world applications of STEAM.
  • to gain insights into potential career paths and the importance of STEAM for sustainable development.

Year 8 Inter School Digital Technology Challenge

South Devon College

South Devon University Technical College would like to invite Year 8 students to our Inter School Digital Technology Challenge event on Tuesday 9th July from 10am to 1.45pm.

Join us for this exciting opportunity for Year 8 students to design and pitch a new AR product, service or app. The design should make a real difference to groups or individuals within the local community.  Experience first-hand some of the latest digital technology equipment available and see how Augmented Reality (AR) is used within industry and education.

Each school will compete in teams of 2 (one team per school). A reserve team may be submitted but will be allocated on first come first served basis.

Apprenticeship Open Day

We'd like to invite you to Greenlight's special Apprenticeship Open Day this September! Building on the incredible success of our other recent events, we're pulling out all the stops for this very special Open Day at our Apprenticeship Training Centre in Plympton!

Our Plymouth training centre will be open from 10AM until 1PM, and we want to meet YOU. If you've ever wondered what it's like to pick up tools and try a trade - we'll give you the opportunity, right here in our training centre!

We'll have live demonstrations of a number of trades onsite, and all the relevant PPE (safety equipment) ready and waiting. Our trainers will be there to advise you and offer guidance. All that you need to do is turn up and get stuck in!

Our team will be on hand to answer all your questions about how it all works, how we operate, what we do, how we can help you gain an Apprenticeship, and what the next steps are. Find out what we can do for you!

Walk-ins welcome - come and visit anytime between 10AM and 1PM. Free parking and refreshments available onsite too! Open to anyone of any age and experience.

Receive hands-on experience in coding, problem-solving, and digital creativity and learn from our experienced lecturers. Dive into brick and woodwork, perfect for those who love outdoor problem- solving, with hands-on tasks like building brick pyramids and crafting wood joints. Explore your creative side in plastering, and painting and decorating, mastering the art with practical experience in a simulated work environment.

  • Dance

This session provides comprehensive training with experienced lecturers. You’ll have the opportunity to explore various dance styles and techniques, enhancing your versatility as a dancer.

  • Games Development

If you are curious about the world of gaming, this is the session for you! Using the latest games development tools, you will spend most of the session immersed in the world of games development. The session will help you experience two of the most important aspects of building a computer game.

  • Health & Childhood Education

Did you know there are over 144 different jobs in the care sector? This taster will offer you the opportunity to find out about the various topics you could study, take part in interactive workshops exploring activities for children and their learning styles, and hear from course lecturers and industry professionals about how to take your first steps towards a career in the caring professions.

A must for any fans of BBC One’s The Apprentice, you’ll hear from course lecturers and industry professionals while working together in teams to design and market your own company, building up to a final group pitch.

  • Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy

Want to know the secrets behind gorgeous nails, flawless make-up and glamorous hair styling? Get the inside scoop in our hair and beauty taster session. After taking part in two workshops during the day, there will also be the opportunity to showcase your skills.

  • Marine Engineering (Boat Building)

Do you see yourself becoming a builder with a difference? Our marine engineering and boatbuilding taster session will provide you with an insight into a career building boats rather than building houses! Whether your ambitions lie in building ships or outfitting the latest super yachts, our industry experts will take you through the basics during this hands-on session.

  • Music

If you love music then this taster session is for you! Working in groups, you will create your own live music piece that you will perform in the afternoon. You will also learn more about the different opportunities available in the music business, and hear from lecturers about their experiences in the industry – from their education and training to playing live and much more.

  • Public Services

Are you someone who can make a difference and display skills recognised by employers across the world?! Why not come and sample a day in the life of a public services student? Experience various events including interactive crime scenes, military style fitness and looking at the UK government to understand how and why decisions are made. Working in the public sector has hugely rewarding opportunities – are you ready to be the change?

  • Sport

Sport brings in £39 billion pounds to the UK each year! Are you ready to be part of it? Come along to our taster session and experience fitness testing in our elite laboratory, try your hand at recovery sports massage and understand exactly how and why our bodies are designed the way they are. Hear from our experienced industry lecturers and see how the sports career of your dreams is not a million miles away!
