Design & Technology: Product Design

Intent

Design & Technology: Product Design is a practical and valuable subject. It enables children and young people to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves and their community. It teaches how to take risks and so become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable. The subject teaches pupils how to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Pupils will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computing and Art.

Implementation

Pupils are encouraged to think creatively through a range of practical projects, looking at a variety of materials and processes. They do this with the needs/wants of the end user in mind. These projects will be underpinned by the core principles of health and safety. At Key Stage 4, pupils will complete an entry level project, introducing them to a linear design process, key terms for designing and making and how to evaluate different aspects of design. They will then complete a GCSE which will follow a much more in depth look at how products are designed and made for a client. The skills developed have a focus around researching, developing and evaluating.

Impact

Pupils will appreciate the world around them and understand how products are designed and made to suit human needs and wants. We aim to encourage a passion for a practical-based subject and open up opportunities for careers such as, Engineering, Interior Design, Product Design and more.
